Dating back thousands of years, Kung Fu is not only one of the oldest martial arts but also the foundation for many other martial arts styles. Known as Wushu in Mandarin, Kung Fu encompasses hundreds of unique styles, many inspired by the movements, spirit, and fighting techniques of animals.
Kung Fu has a rich history in North America, having been taught in secret by early Chinese immigrants until the 1970s, when it began to spread beyond the Chinese community. Today, it stands as a powerful and beautiful martial art that combines physical skill with philosophical teachings.
Kung Fu practitioners develop strength, agility, and focus through a variety of techniques, including hand strikes, kicks, and traditional forms—choreographed sequences that mimic real-life combat situations. Training also includes the use of traditional Chinese weapons, adding depth and versatility to a student’s martial arts journey.
One of the most well-known systems of Kung Fu is the Shaolin 5 Animal style, which we teach at Kitchener Kicks. This unique style combines the principles of the Tiger, Leopard, Snake, Crane, and Dragon, each representing a different aspect of martial prowess:
